Capital Campaign History
Trinity’s multi-year A Future With Hope Mission and Ministry Campaign was kicked off in 2021. We asked Trinity’s members and friends for prayerful generosity to support two things at once. Each year of the campaign, the congregation continues faithfully pledging their annual stewardship support for the operations and ministries of the church. In addition, Capital Campaign pledges have also been made. These are being fulfilled over the three years of the capital campaign (2022 – 2024), allowing for significant impactful gifts.
Unlike traditional “building campaigns” that fund construction projects, the focus of the Mission and Ministry Capital Campaign was better preparing Trinity for future ministry. Originally, campaign funds were being requested for:
- Immediate Capital Project Needs (parking lot asphalt / concrete / lighting, pipe organ repair, Golf Road sign)
- Building Reserve Seed Funding
- Team 2020 Vision: Staff and Program Budget Support
In mid-2021 as this campaign was being organized, the air conditioning for the Trinity Sanctuary and Narthex failed. When it was determined that replacement was the only realistic option, HVAC improvements became the new top priority capital project. Since Building Reserves are established for this type of emergency, HVAC also preempted that capital funding objective. The HVAC project took through mid-2022 and also ended up replacing office air conditioning, old pneumatic controls and related boilers.
Capital Campaign Generosity
So far, the Mission and Ministry Capital Campaign has been well supported and demonstrates amazing Trinity Generosity:
- Campaign pledges of $627K exceed the optimistic target of $600K!
- 22% of the campaign pledges (over $140K) were received in late 2021 – before day 1 of the pledge period!
- Accelerated gifts allowed a November 2021 early HVAC project start and have funded projects without bank loans!
- We continue to project better than 99% fulfillment of all capital pledges!
Budget Support
The Capital Campaign supports Mission and Ministry. $240K of the Capital Campaign funds ($60K per year for 4 years) are designated for Budget Support. This was 40% of the original capital campaign target – now just 38% due to added pledges. The remainder of the Capital Campaign pledges are now for capital projects.
Budget Support contributions help offset potential operating deficits caused by added expenses for new ministry programs and reconfigured staffing, and full apportionment payments.
Campaign Finance Projections
$627K of capital campaign pledges will not fully achieve all the original objectives.
The full HVAC project cost $270K. The $40K Organ repair project has been fully funded by Memorial gifts (not the campaign). This still leaves just $117K for remaining capital projects. The parking lot (asphalt, concrete and lighting) is now expected to be over $200K, and the sign over $30K.
Even with $60K of budget balancing support, it is also becoming difficult to both balance the budget and pay full apportionments. In 2022, full apportionment payments only occurred because of a late $10K special gift. The 2023 projected budget deficit is larger than $60K, requiring partial apportionment payments.
As we approach year 3 of the Mission and Ministry Capital Campaign, Trinity members and friends are asked to prayerfully consider making a one year capital campaign pledge if you have not done so previously. We also ask those with current pledges to consider whether they now have the ability to increase their gift during 2024.
